Some people hate it, some people love it and others have no clue about what “it” even is when it comes to the infamous genre of music known as Trap. First, let’s get one thing very straight… there’s a huge difference between the Trap and Trap-style musical genres. Trap was originally created as a form of Rap by Southern music producers and beat makers in the early 90s. Producers such as Lex Luger,
Zaytoven and DJ Scream used kits including the Roland TR-808 Drum Machine to make a new form of Rap known as Trap. Songs like “Real Big” (97 bpm) by Mannie Fresh started to define this new form of music and bring it to the mainstream. Trap-style was later formed in the early 2000s by Electronic music producers including Flosstradamus, RL Grime and Keys N Krates. The most well-known song to come the forefront of American Trap-style was the Youtube sensation “Harlem Shake” by Baauer in 2013. It brought this genre of music to light in the world of Electronic music.
Many current forms of Trap-style and modern Rap music are currently between the 70 bpm – 115 bpm range. The truth is that it is hard to judge what is Trap or Trap-style because the blending, merging and fusion of these two genres has become prevalent in popular music. If you thought it wasn’t confusing enough and would like some form of clarity, consider that Trap-style itself had a very basic formula. Rap drums, Dutch House synthesizers and Dubstep or no bass lines were the norm. Many sub-generes have merged from these original forms of music including ChillTrap, Hype and Trapstep. Bringing us to a very important question and possibly the most important question of our time as music producers. Where is Trap music going?
I don’t have a crystal ball, a Delorean DMC 12 or magical foresight. However, I am someone that examines musical trends in great detail and depth. For now let me be your Batman and research the facts. In the early 2000s Trap-style music was being experimented with by producers like Flosstradamus. Their infamous remix of Matt and Kim’s Yea Yeah was in the bpm of 125 bpm. Many might say the track has more House elements, which is true, but when you listen to the remix you can easily hear the basis for many of Flosstradmus’ hit Trap-style songs especially at 2:39 on the original Youtube music video. The build and breakdown in this remix could easily be argued as the first real Trap-style song ever created. Fact is, it was one of my greatest influences and inspirations as a young DJ learning to mix music. Flosstradamus pushed their music into the future which turned into famous tracks like Rollup at 80 bpm in 2012. Now the most recent track by Flosstradamus, FKi 1st & graves was released 19 days ago on their Soundcloud entitled Came Up Ft. Post Malone & Key at a bpm of 154 bpm. Seeing an over all trend yet? If not, don’t worry. I’ll drop it harder than one of Flosstradamus’ breakdowns in my conclusion.
By analyzing the bpms of Flosstradamus’ career we can see a common trend which actually works with most musical genres including Rap. Believe it or not, Trap-style music tends to work in the same way as Rap trends because they are almost synonymous. Things on the Rap end are turning to a genre well known as Slowed Down. Perhaps you’ve heard someone driving with their system all the way up and the song slowed all the way down? Doesn’t have to be your favorite genre and most of the time music trends can be frustrating to most. Open your eyes and put your bias aside for one minute and maybe even brace yourself for the clear fact that Trap-style is clearly slowing down too. Funny how an artist like Flosstradamus can get it right almost ten years ago. The future of Trap-style and Trap music is slowing down. After a certain point it will break. Things in the world of Rap and Trap-style will start speeding up again because after a certain point is reached, music trends including political trends go back and forth with time. For now, if you want to be in the current genre format, produce in the 150 bpm range. However, if you want to be at the forefront of change, make your Trap-style music in the clear answer written in this article. I will leave it up to the super sleuths to detect it.
